2h long games for $60, glitchy games with no hope of updates, games with a retarded difficulty or on the contrary way too easy and sometimes with no difficulty settings. And you could count the really good games on a console with just two hands. It’s only slowly that home video games have evolved from “free” quarter munchers to something more fitting of the platform. When you played Sonic on the Sega Genisis you didn’t have saves. It took you many days of starting from Green Hill Zone before you ever finally made it to the end of the game. That’s more practice for each level and an exciting reason to keep playing to see the end finally.

I’m referring to the likes of Big the Cat, Vector the Crocodile and Cream the Rabbit. And done right, some of them, like Shining Force, could see a Renaissance similar to Nintendo’s success with Fire Emblem in recent years. Every spin-off and arcade game, by release date

Sonic used to change constantly between entries, adding new characters, gameplay styles, and trying new things with the story. This has become less and less a part of the franchise since around 2006. That year’s double whammy of Sonic the Hedgehog (PS3/360) and Sonic the Hedgehog cemented the character as something of a laughing stock in pop culture. Sonic 06 was crushed under the weight of its own ambitions and a lack of proper development time, while Sonic Genesis for the GBA was a strange mangling of the original game. Sonic Unleashed was the final nail in the coffin; while the daytime stages were an excellent rendition of 3D Sonic, players and critics were more than frustrated with the action oriented Werehog segments. Since then, Sonic Team has tried to play it a bit safer with the only major deviation from the Classic and Modern styles cemented by Sonic Generations being Lost World which… well, let’s not get into that.

SEGA is promising an expanded adventure, a leap forward for a franchise that has long-struggled to find its footing with a third dimension in play. It has so far shown little of it, outside of a reveal trailer in the last weeks of 2021, but there is reason to believe that Sonic Frontiers will succeed where Sonic the Hedgehog, Sonic Unleashed, and Sonic Forces failed.
