60 Minutes: Red Sea Crisis/False Voters/The Search for Cillian Murphy (2024)
Eileen Furlong: If you want to live this life, there are things you have to ignore. If Oppenheimer Cillian Murphy, as an acting giant, seemed like the most magnificent stage, Small Things Like This seems like his ability to reveal the most sophisticated emotions with the subtlest facial expressions.
It’s a very quiet film, so I found it very powerful because of all the things you don’t see on screen
It’s very effective in the way it transports you to this period in history and, speaking as someone who doesn’t really know anything about this part of history, I found it very authentic. As I said, it’s a very quiet film with minimal visuals or dialogue, and while it often worked, I couldn’t help but feel like it affected the pacing a bit.
Little things like this feel like a passion project using the simplest of cinematic techniques to tell its story
At only 90 minutes, the film felt longer, which isn’t a bad thing in and of itself, but I think after the slow build of the film, I think I wanted a little more from the ending. I could see it being too emotionally distant for some people, but for me, I still wanted to explore the emotions it was trying to convey.
It’s not a film I’ll be rewatching any time soon, but it’s also not one I’ll be getting out of my head any time soon
